Spoken by Dr. Sarah Duvall, PT, DPT, CPT, CNC, "Strength training postpartum trumps cardio"... As new moms within the first few weeks or months of birth, we tend to want to push ourselves to lose weight and get back to our normal selves as quickly as possibly. Especially, us moms that worked out through our pregnancy. Sloooooow down! Our bodies and pelvic floors are not half as ready as our mind is or the rest of our body. Something to ask yourself, "will this particular exercise benefit me in restoring a part of my body that has been through a huge change?". When it comes to running...probably not, so it's time to get back to basics. Get fit before you run. Your body needs to be in shape and train prior to engaging in running. Running is a very taxing load on your body - let it wait. Instead, with your doctors permission do light strength training that doesn't put any intra abdominal pressure on your pelvic floor and learn to BREATH!!!!
