Out of Hibernation—Can Your Body Keep Up This Spring?

March 23, 2026

Every year, it happens.

The sun comes out…
You start walking more…
You consider wearing something other than a parka…

And your body is like:

“Ma’am. We’ve been in survival mode since November.”

Because let’s be honest…

Here in Cleveland, we don’t just have winter—we hibernate.

For, oh… 4 to 5 business months.

Cold. Gray. Icy. Wind that personally attacks your soul.

You think you’re still moving…

But really?

You’ve been doing a lot of:

  • Car → house
  • House → car
  • Maybe a brave grocery store run
  • And calling that “activity.”

And now suddenly it’s 55° and sunny and you’re like:

“Let’s walk 4 miles and reorganize our entire life.”

And your body is like:

“Absolutely not.”

Winter Happens (Even If You Pretend It Didn’t)

Winter quietly does a number on you.

Less movement.
More sitting.
More “I’ll start Monday again”… for 12 Mondays in a row.

And again—that’s normal.

But here’s the part most people miss:

You’re moving way less than you think during the winter months.

Even if you “feel busy,” your body:

  • Isn’t getting full range of motion
  • Isn’t loading muscles the same way
  • Isn’t being challenged

So when spring hits, it’s not just a season change…

It’s a movement shock.

Suddenly:

  • Your hips feel tight
  • Your core feels… missing?
  • Your back starts sending passive-aggressive messages
  • Your energy is like “we’re gonna need a minute.”

This isn’t you “falling off.

This is your body saying:

“Hey… we’ve been offline for a bit.”

This Isn’t About a Bikini (I Promise)

Now here comes the seasonal panic:

“I need to tone up.”
“I should lose a few pounds.”
“I need to get in shape for summer.”

Or my personal favorite:

“I’ll just walk more.”

(We love the optimism.)

But what you actually want has nothing to do with a bikini.

You want to:

  • Go for a long walk without your back tightening halfway through
  • Get up off the ground without making it a full production
  • Keep up with your life without needing a nap after
  • Say yes to plans without thinking, I’m too tired for this

This is about function.
This is about energy.
This is about not feeling like your body is betraying you after a 20-minute walk.

What Your Body Actually Needs Right Now

1. Strength (Because Walking Isn’t a Personality Trait)

Walking is great. Truly.

But walking is maintenance.

It does not magically rebuild the muscle you ghosted all winter.

You need:

  • Glutes that actually turn on (not just exist)
  • A core that supports your spine (instead of freeloading)
  • Strength that carries into real life

Because strength is what makes everything feel easier.

2. Mobility (Your Hips Are Not Subtle About This)

If your hips feel tight…
Your back feels cranky…
You make sound effects getting off the floor…

That’s not “just getting older.”

That’s your body being like:

“We have not moved properly in months.”

A few minutes of intentional mobility can:

  • Open up your hips
  • Calm your back down
  • Make movement feel smoother (and less dramatic)

3. Consistency (Not Your 3-Day Motivation Sprint)

You don’t need to go from zero to “new person by Monday.”

You need:

Because that burst of motivation when it hits 60°?

  • 2–3 short sessions a week
  • Simple, effective movements
  • Something you’ll actually stick with

It fades.
Habits don’t.

The Real Goal This Spring

Not smaller.
Stronger.

Not exhausted.
Energized.

Not “starting over for the 47th time.”
Actually building something that lasts.

Where to Start (Without Overthinking It)

If your body is feeling that “just thawed out” stiffness…

Keep it simple.

Start with:

  • Core connection
  • Hip and glute activation
  • Basic strength patterns

Because you don’t need extreme.

You need effective.

That’s exactly why I created my short guided routines:

Fire & Foundation → reconnect your core (aka wake it up from hibernation.

It’s quick, targeted, and designed to help you feel better fast—without needing an hour or a personality transplant.

Closing

Cleveland is (hopefully) coming out of hibernation…

And your body is right there with it.

Let’s just not shock the system by going from:

“barely moved for 4 months”
to
“let’s do everything all at once”

Because feeling strong…

Feeling capable…

Feeling like your body actually has your back…

That’s the real glow-up.
